Key Dance Information for 2019

All classes are free but costume fees do apply for before and after school classes.

Students are expected to attend their dance class each week if they wish to be placed in routines and have the opportunity to perform at the end of year Dance and Glee Concert. Many groups will also have the chance to perform at other school and community events throughout the year.

The before and after school dance classes have limited places. Preference into these classes will be given to students who have been in the dance program in previous years. Parents/Guardians of students new to the school should speak to Jennifer Whiteoak.

Recess and lunchtime dance classes do not have any restriction on numbers, but students need to attend regularly to maintain a place in the dance class.

The Burwood Heights Primary School Annual Dance and Glee Concert will be held at the Kel Watson Theatre, on Wednesday 4th December, 2019, at 7:00pm.  A rehearsal for the concert will be held at the theatre on Wednesday 27th November, 2019, during the school day.

Prep

Prep students can join Prep Dance on a Thursday recess. This class will start in Term Two. The class is open for all Prep students to come along and try. Students will be asked to commit by the end of Term Two if they wish to perform in the end of year Dance and Glee concert at the theatre.

Junior School

The Sparkle Dance Troupe is before school on a Wednesday morning and is a jazz and ballet class. The Opal Tap Troupe is on a Wednesday lunchtime and is a beginner tap class. Students will learn two routines. There will be a costume fee of up to $50 for these classes.

Boys are also invited to join the Boys Blue Crew which will start later in the year. The class is open for the boys to come along and try. Students will be asked to commit to attending every week later in the year if they wish to perform in the end of year Dance and Glee concert at the theatre.

Junior Glee rehearse on a Tuesday at recess in the E. Wood Centre. Students need to commit to attend weekly if they wish to perform. Costume fees may apply.

Middle and Senior School

The Star and Crystal Dance Troupes are open to students in Grade Three to Six. Jazz and ballet technique as well as routines are taught in these classes. The Sapphire Troupe is also a jazz and ballet class being run for Grade Three students due to the large number of Middle School students in the Dance Program. Students are given the opportunity to perform at different school and community events as well as the end of year Dance Concert.  The Diamond Troupe is a more advanced class and is by invitation only for students from Grades Four to Six. Girls in one of these classes need tan jazz shoes and matte tan tights. Boys need black jazz shoes. There will be a costume fee of up to $50 for these classes.

The Topaz Tap Troupe is a beginner - intermediate tap class which will focus on teaching basic tap technique. There will be a costume fee of up to $40.00. Students will start classes on a Monday lunchtime, but mid-year some students will be moved to a recess class due to the large number of students enrolled.

Boys are invited to join the Boys Blue Crew which will start later in the year. The class is open for the boys to come along and try. Students will be asked to commit to attending every week later in the year if they wish to perform in the end of year Dance and Glee concert at the theatre.

Students in Grades Three to Five may audition for Glee B and students in Grades Four to Six may audition for Glee A. Usually around twelve to fourteen students are selected for each group after a singing and dancing audition.

Dance Stars and Dance Fair Victoria Choreographic Competitions

Both competitions are interschool choreographic competitions and require students to choreograph their own dance routines. Two or three entries are permitted for each category. A ‘Dance Off’ will be run to select the students to represent the school when more students want to compete than we are permitted to enter into the competition. The competitions are usually held in April, May and June.  A meeting for expressions of interest to compete is usually held in December for the following year and further meetings and rehearsal schedules are organised in February.
