What began as a small garden to furnish fresh food for the kitchen has evolved into a play area for inquiry based learning. We have already witnessed the positive results in student engagement, attitude to school, self-confidence, resilience, tenacity, independence and the acquisition of everyday living skills. The Outdoor Learning Classroom gives children the opportunity to explore the world around them in a real, hands on experiential way.
The garden is open three lunchtimes each week for student to play in the space. Our school counsellor and wellbeing co-ordinator facilitate these lunchtime play sessions as well as taking students out to the garden to help with planting, harvesting and wood chopping. Students attend Science lesson in the garden and Junior School students participate in Mathematics lessons in the garden fortnightly.
